A University of Mount
Union student knows all too well how one decision by a drunk driver can change
a life forever. Melinda was pinned inside her
crushed vehicle and suffered two broken legs, a dislocated arm and a mild brain
injury after a drunk driver slammed into her car.
“I had to learn how to stand up and I had to learn how to walk before I could leave the hospital... I had to fight to get out of bed, fight because someone took that away from me,” said Melinda.
Senseless tragedies
involving alcohol remain too common. While the dangers of driving under the
influence are well-known, campaigns against drunk driving are endless, and
states have imposed strict drunk driving laws, people continue to get behind
the wheel while under the influence. According
to the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA), many of these accidents happen during the holiday
season. “Every 54 minutes during the
holiday season drunk driving claims a life,” said Anthony Fox, a U.S.
Transportation Secretary.
Lawsuit
Financial, a pro-justice litigation funding company, shares these tips to
protect you and others this holiday season.
- If you drink, don't drive no matter
how little you may have had.
- Don't let someone you know get behind
the wheel if they've been drinking.
- Avoid driving between during early and
late evening hours on holidays.
- Be cautious and watch for the erratic
movements of other drivers.
- Immediately report suspected drunk drivers to the police.
We urge everyone to do
their part to keep motorists safe. Be
responsible; don’t drink and drive. You
can hand over your keys or your life. Make the right choice.
