2 Drunk 2 Care!

A girl who tweeted ‘2 drunk 2 care’ before killing two best friends in a wrong-way car crash has been sentenced to 24 years in prison.

The 20-year-old boasted on social media about being drunk minutes before she drove the wrong way at between 84 and 96 miles per hour hitting another vehicle head on, killing two women. Her blood alcohol content was almost twice the legal limit and she had marijuana in her system, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.  She was also driving without a valid driver’s license.

The families of the deceased young women filed lawsuits against the drunk driver, a friend (whose car she was driving), and the bar that allegedly served her alcohol on the night of the accident. An amended lawsuit claims that her ex-employer, hosted the work-related party at the bar.

A year-and-a-half later the woman has been sentence to 24 years in prison, six years of probation, and the permanent revocation of her license. In February, she pleaded guilty to two counts of DUI manslaughter. The woman said she remembers going out for drinks with coworkers, but has no recollection of driving that night, or of the accident. A receipt shows that she drank two large house margaritas and two other drinks of Patron tequila. About the tweet, she said that it was aimed at her boyfriend, with whom she had an earlier argument; it was not intended to mean she didn’t care about driving drunk and killing someone. Before being sentenced, the woman read a letter in court asking forgiveness.

"No matter how much time passes they will never leave my heart. I think about them every day and I regret my choices every day," she said. "I don't remember deciding to drive that night so I can't even tell you what was going through my mind when I made that decision. I have no excuses for anything I've done, I just ask for forgiveness."

Two families have been torn apart and two young adults have lost their future because of a few of drinks and irresponsibility. Many people may not think much about drunk driving and how it can impact their life and the lives of others until something happens. Life is full of choices; a bad choice, in a single moment, can have permanent and life-changing consequences. That is certainly the case here. When will they stop? Drinking alcoholic beverages is a choice; you are entitled to it. What you are not entitled to is to endangering others (and yourself) by combining excessive alcohol consumption with driving.

  1. My blood is boiling after reading this article. I hope that the family and friends of those she killed drive to the jail frequently and let her know every day how her not caring affected so many. It is people like this that never learn the lesson until too late. I say 24 years was too light, double it for each person she slaughtered.
