Child Killed by Logging Truck in Maine

A five-year-old boy was killed when the driver of a tractor-trailer fell asleep behind the wheel. The truck driver had rounded a slight curve when the vehicle struck two utility poles and flipped on its side. The truck stopped against a house spilling its tree-length load of logs that demolished the home in which the boy was sleeping. The impact also caused the second floor of the home to collapse to the ground level. The boy died at the scene. Four other occupants were treated at an area hospital and released; the child’s mother sustained a head injury and five pelvic fractures, one that went into her lower spine.

The house was nearly split in two by the impact of the logs. Although the homes has now been demolished, the investigation into this tragedy is ongoing. Speed also appears to be a factor in this fatal accident. No charges have been filed to day against the Canadian driver.

Many truck accidents happen because of driver negligence; falling asleep behind the wheel, speeding, and/or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Other times, truck accidents are due to improper training or failure to properly maintain and inspect the vehicle. Irrelevant of the reason, victims are entitled to compensation for their medical expenses, funeral and burial expenses, and pain and suffering.

If you or a loved one has been involved in a truck accident, it is important to contact an experienced truck accident attorney. An attorney can fight for the rights of victims and ensure that they are fairly compensated.
