Investigation Underway As To Why Teen Stopped Before Entering Intersection In Front Of Semi

Two 16-year-old boys were killed over the weekend in a crash with a semi-truck at an intersection in rural Kane County, according to a news report.

After stopping at the stop sign, the teen driver pulled into the intersection, for unknown reasons. The pick-up truck was struck by the semi, which did not have to stop at the intersection, according to the sheriff’s office. The vehicles collided, both rolled over, taking out a utility pole and power lines near the intersection. Both teens were pronounced dead at the scene. The semi driver was treated and released at the scene. The Sheriff’s Office and an Accident Reconstruction Team are investigating the crash.

The teen driver could have been distracted by any host of reasons – chatting, joking around, texting, etc. He could have been due to poor judgement – the teen simply thought he would be able to beat the semi through the intersection. No matter the reason behind the crash, the untimely death of anyone is always a tragedy.

For over a month, doctors had no explanation as to why a Toledo, Ohio woman suddenly went blind. It wasn’t until the woman mentioned she owned a cat that doctors traced back the source of the infection - a common bacteria known as Bartonella henselae, which causes a condition called "cat scratch" disease.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, approximately 40 percent of cats will carry the bacterium that causes the disease, within their lifetimes. It doesn’t hurt cats, but it can harm humans. The rare infection can be passed through bites or scratches, but can also be transmitted through affectionate behaviors like licking. Though rare, “cat scratch” can affect the brain, eyes, heart or other internal organs, with cases most common among children younger than age 5 and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of “cat scratch disease” may include fever, muscle pain, a fluid-filled lesion at the site of the scratch or bite, and sore and enlarged lymph nodes that develop one to three weeks after exposure. To reduce the risk of “cat scratch,” the CDC recommends that people wash their hands after playing with their pets and clean wounds from cats immediately. Also, avoid rough play that would cause the felines to bite or scratch and don’t let them lick open wounds.

The truck collided with the Vibe, then hit a wooden power pole and large rock. The Vibe spun and landed in a ditch.  According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the teen, a backseat passenger in the Vibe, was not wearing a seatbelt.  Police said fog was light, but was not a factor in the accident. An investigation is ongoing.
