Avoiding Holiday Stress

Although “It’s the most wonderful time of the year,” the holiday season often brings unwelcome guests – stress and worry, especially with gift buying, decorating, entertaining, to name a few.  The great thing about holiday stress is that it’s predictable; we know when it will begin and end.  We can make plans to reduce the amount of stress we experience and the negative impact it has on us by learning to recognize our own holiday triggers - financial pressures or personal demands, and following some practical tips to experience a relaxing and joyous holiday season.

  1. Have realistic expectations.  The holidays don't have to be perfect or just like last year
  2. Simplify your to-do list.  Ask yourself, “Will I die tomorrow if this thing doesn’t get done?”
  3. Ask for help.  Remember, Santa had elves.
  4. Prioritize. Make a plan to focus on one thing at a time
  5. Be flexible.
  6. Prepare for the unexpected.  Know that some problems and delays are possible, if not likely, such as traffic.
  7. Stick to a budget. Don't feel pressured to "over-spend."
  8. Plan ahead.  Avoid last minute scrambling for gift and meal shopping.
  9. Learn to say no. Saying yes when you should say no can leave you feeling resentful and overwhelmed.  Don’t let “supposed to do” take the place of what you would like to do or what brings you enjoyment.
  10. Acknowledge your feelings.  The holidays can also be a time of year that brings up unpleasant memories such as a lost loved one. It is important to acknowledge that these memories are present without allowing them to take over your celebration.
  11. Set aside differences. Try to accept family members and friends as they are, even if they don't live up to all of your expectations. Be more understanding of others.
  12. Take care of yourself.  Eat healthy and get plenty of rest.  Take breaks by reading a book or going for a walk.
Most important of all, enjoy the spirit of the season. Remember that the holidays are short, as is life.
